The History of the O’Donoghue Ring Collection

A Family Legacy in Irish Hospitality

Founded in 1978

The story of the O’Donoghue Ring Collection began in the heart of County Kerry in 1978. What started as a single hotel has grown into a cherished family-owned collection of distinctive hotels, bars and restaurants, each rooted in the traditions and warm hospitality that define this beautiful region of Ireland.

Set against the majestic mountains, lakes and landscapes of The Kingdom, our collection reflects the spirit of Kerry itself – welcoming, vibrant and deeply connected to place. Today, the O’Donoghue Ring Collection is recognised as one of the most respected names in Irish hospitality, blending contemporary comfort with a deep respect for local heritage.

Throughout our journey, the values established by our founders continue to guide everything we do: genuine warmth, personal service, and a commitment to creating memorable guest experiences. While our collection has grown and evolved over the decades, the essence of our hospitality remains unchanged, a heartfelt Kerry welcome extended to every guest who walks through our doors.

1978

Where it all began

The foundations of  the O’Donoghue Ring Collection were laid in 1978 when Michael O’Donoghue and Donal Ring purchased the property that would become the East Avenue Hotel in Killarney.

Opening its doors in June of that year, the hotel featured just 16 bedrooms and a function room, but quickly became a vibrant gathering place for both locals and visitors. The East Avenue gained popularity as a wedding venue and became well known for its Friday night Ceilí dances, creating an atmosphere of music, community and celebration that would become synonymous with the family’s hospitality.

1986

Expanding the Experience

In 1986, the collection expanded its entertainment offering with the opening of Revelles Nightclub at the Killarney Avenue Hotel. Opening on April 10th, Revelles quickly became one of Killarney’s most iconic nightlife destinations and played a vibrant role in the town’s social scene for many years.

A New Chapter for the Killarney Avenue

By 1988, growing demand led to a significant redevelopment of the original East Avenue property. The older structure was demolished and rebuilt, reopening in August as the Killarney Avenue Hotel, now offering 66 guestrooms.

Alongside the expanded accommodation, two much-loved dining venues were introduced: Druids Restaurant, offering a refined dining experience with both local and international influences, and The Kenmare Rooms, a traditional Irish bar known for its welcoming atmosphere and live music.

1989

Growing the Collection

In 1989, the family acquired the Imperial Hotel on College Street in Killarney, marking another significant step in the collection’s expansion. At the time, the purchase represented the highest price ever paid per room for an Irish hotel.

The Killarney Towers Hotel

The vision for growth continued in 1990 with the construction of the Killarney Towers Hotel. In a remarkable achievement, 100 guestrooms were completed in just 100 days.

The hotel also introduced two popular venues: O’Donoghue Public House, a traditional Irish pub full of character, and Scruffy’s, a lively late-night venue.

1992

Expanding Further

Just two years later, the Killarney Towers Hotel expanded again with the addition of 82 further bedrooms, bringing the total to 182 rooms and strengthening its position as a leading destination in Killarney.

1998

A Vision for Luxury

In 1998, the collection purchased the Three Lakes Hotel in Killarney. The property was demolished in 2000 to make way for a new vision.

In 2002, the Killarney Plaza Hotel & Spa opened with 198 guestrooms, an award-winning spa and leisure centre, and several dining venues including Café du Parc, The Tan Yard, La Grand Pey and The Piano Bar.
